The Continuing Adventures of Mon and Waz

The Adventures of Captain Warren and First Mate Monica. Having completed America's Great Loop in 2014, life doesn't slow down for these intrepid travelers. Each year brings new challenges; some good, some bad, but challenges nonetheless! 2017 sees them renting an apartment while 'Untide' is For Sale. Life on terra firma isn't all it is cracked up to be, but more change is in the wind. Read on for the latest!

Friday 4 July 2014

Sodus Bay To Point Breeze.

When we went outside to have a shower off the back deck, last night, we notices we had neighbors on the water. We could see a yacht's anchor light (top of mast) fairly close to us. We hadn't been aware of any wake in the growing dark or noticed that we had neighbors. We showered off back anyway. The air was warm and the cold water was almost as warm! Another very hot day, inland. On the water was another matter, however.

We rose early and decided to get going. We didn't feel like eating much for breakfast, so we polished off the strawberries and a nectarine for breakfast and took the anchor up just after 7am.

Such a gorgeous morning, but the wind was up a little, as you can see by the water ripples.

This home in the trees was just opposite where we anchored. We aren't sure whether the trees are good in winter, as in supplying snow shelter, or a hazard...but in summer they sure would be good for shade! Arent the trees lovely?:)

Warren had a bit of a job getting all the sticky mud off the chain and anchor...Im at the helm, when I take these photos. He gives me hand directions to either go forward, back or stop, to lift the anchor...then he points in the direction of the channel and off we go:)

We retraced our path back to the entry to the Bay, on the way out to Lake Ontario.

The morning sun catching the same homes on the end of the peninsula.
A family was out Kayaking with their baby in arms (mom and dad in one kayak) and this child who looked to be no more than 5 or 6...not tethered to their Kayak, but on his own! (sorry for focus!or lack of)

As you can see, it took us about 15 mins to get to the entry to the canal that goes back to the lake.
Coast Guard are stationed right at the entry to the bay. There is a large presence here.
Looking back inside the canal and Sodus Bay, as we round the corner into Lake Ontario. The wind was cool, and we had our sweaters on. Can you see he man on the concrete wall in front of the Light House? he is fishing!

We stayed close to shore again today. It was a bit choppy out further, then the wind went down and we got rolling swells, sometimes from all different directions...interesting! It was also interesting to see that the water depth went from 2 feet near shore to 16, to 27, to 149 and then over 600ft!

Fresh water!! and a lovely green:) Even the spray had a different quality to it, from that of salt water. The foam was different and dissipated quickly.

It was a five hour trip up the southern coast to Point Breeze. In this  time I cleaned the stainless steel on the fly deck, wiped the floor and gave myself a pedicure! I even painted my toe nails....such was the quiet of the water although the wind kept it cool for a long time. The closer to land we got, the warmer the air. It was very marked.

We had instructions to go past the rock wall at the entry to Point Breeze, then come back in and around to enter the canal to the river. There is a little light house on the land, just here.
 The breakwater is very necessary!

The channel is marked in pale blue, but we took a wider swing, going in, as the wind was fairly strong and the lake had roughed up a bit. The channel isn't that wide, but we made it inside easily. There was plenty of depth, also, as you can see....13.2ft.

Coming around the breakwater covered with seagulls....how come there are seagulls so far from the ocean?
The channel is marked with rocks, and of course a red triangle (danger) on the right.

Heavens!! a Maori name for a boat?? They must have Kiwi connections, or at least someone IS a kiwi! Kia Ora means 'Welcome'.

The river is wide enough for most activities, and it allowed us to go forward, then back into the dock. Waz made one run at it to gauge the current in the river (strong) and the effects of that and the wind, on his backing into the relatively narrow space to dock. This photo is looking up river.
and this is looking back towards the channel, from whence we came.,

There was an almighty clunk as waz backed into the dock...about 30 feet out. I thought he had cluncked the gears, but that isn't possible...just how it sounded!! I couldn't tell, as I was on the back deck holding the rope to get it around a cleat on the dock. The bow was blown onto the dock first, but I managed to get a rope on from the stern before securing the rest of the boat. I had things all ready for a quick tie-up, as we knew the wind wasn't going to be kind!

Safely docked at 2.43pm, Wednesday afternoon. Phew! we made it.

We were pretty exhausted by the time we greeted our hosts, Robyn and Dave when they came home from work.

It is good to have the opportunity to sit for a few days and collect ourselves...I think!

We have two sets of friends here at Point Breeze. Robyn and Dave, who kindly allow us to use their dock...their beautiful Minorcan boat is on the hard for the summer, in Stuart, Florida, and my long time Maui friends Andrea and Dale, who live a short way up the river.

We don't have cell phone coverage here with our T-Mobile phones, which is a pain, but we had warned A and D that we would be into dock later in the afternoon. We took the dinghy off the back and tiki-toured up the river to find their dock. I knew they had a fishing vessel of some kind, and low...there was Dale waiting for us on the Dock:) So good to see these friends who lived a few miles from me on Maui, for so many years. Waz and I had stayed at their lovely home in Kerrville, Tx, in 2010, when we visited there. Having sold that home, they bought the cutie they now own up here, as their summer residence Both of them are from these parts originally, and so have come home, kind of. We spent and hour and half with them and then back to R and D's for dinner on their deck, facing the sunset and the lake. Lovely:)

A yacht approaches us as we take the dinghy out into the river to go to A and D's.

I love the romance of these old yachts...come to think of it, it probably isn't that old...just looks like it!:)
All kinds of structures on the river, and steep banks to negotiate to the homes at the top. Very pretty and overgrown.

IT is wall to wall yachts and motor boats, as we pass the Yacht Club..on both sides of the river.
What the ice does to docks! It bends and buckles them. Now they are unusable!
A and D's dock and 81 stairs to the top of the property where the house is. Dale was waiting on the end of the dock for us...I hope he hadn't been there a long time. I called them from Daves phone to let them know we would be arriving soon, by dinghy. We don't have other transport, so 'by water' is excellent.

We slept like logs, as we do anyway, on the water, and it is great to be hooked up to water and electricity. It was also good to get the first loads of laundry underway, as we were getting a little desperate for clothes.

I hung the wet laundry up to dry, about 11pm!  then went to bed...all chores on hold for the rest of the night:)
