A Day at Rest in Pisgah Bay, Kentucky. Land Between the Lakes.

After a good night's sleep in the cool, we awoke to find a light fog and small amount of wind. The forecast frost didn't eventuate...too much wind, we believe. We didn't feel any great hurry to get up and move on, and decided, before making breakfast, and over our pre-meal morning coffee, that we would take a day out and just relax.
We have the luxury of time! Because we cannot arrive in Florida before the 1st of November, for Insurance purposes, we have the rest of October to relax and enjoy the journey down the Rivers to Alabama.

We decided to take the dinghy off the back and go tiki-touring. Originally we wanted to take the little boat into the quarry next to Pisgah Bay, from which much of the original rock that went into building the dams on Kentucky Lake, came from. The white caps on the lake decided that one for us, as we would have to retrace our way in, and then into the next bay. Getting out of this bay was not on the cards with the wind.

The wind blown clouds are fascinating when you are out of the wind!:)

Instead we did a tour around the coast of the bay, discovered an RV park and camping ground and a small cemetery.

What a perfect holiday place!
Leaving our baby for the short trip around the lake.
 ...and finally on shore.

We ended our small journey on the beach opposite the boat. Curious to know what kind of sand we saw from a distance, we made some interesting discoveries. One of those was that there are Mussels...fresh water mussels in Kentucky Lake! Later we learned that they used to be harvested commercially and sent to Japan to seed the Pearl Oysters there. The industry died out due to bacteria in the Japanese Oysters and thus the Kentucky Mussels were no longer needed. That is the simpler version of the story, anyway!

Waz found this fish skull. We haven't found out the species, but it was quite large!

We enjoyed the 45 mins or so we spent on the beach...enjoying the color of the fallen trees in their sandy environment. We found snail shells...many of them, in the flotsam on the beach. Waz also rescued a couple of nasty barbed fishing hooks that fishermen had left behind. We had bare feet, so were very grateful he found them.

Fall leaves gathered by the wind, against a fallen log.
Lots of sharp little rocks and spiral snail shells on the beach

The fall leaves were so different in color. It is almost impossible, once you start, to stop photographing:)

The National Park is not populated, and we were not aware of the sounds of any animals at night, as we had rather anticipated, to our disappointment. Waz has a thing about seeing Bears :) but alas, we have not seen any to date. We did see wild animal foot prints on the beach, as well as dog and man! Perhaps Racoon? Long claws, whatever it was.

Getting back to the boat as the sun was going down, we covered the dinghy ready to move on tomorrow. Lovely to just relax in such gorgeous surroundings.:)
