It was humid outside, so we put the air conditioning on, for a change, so I wasn't exhausted by the time I finished the vacuuming. We did 4 loads of laundry and hung most of them on the line out back...dried pretty well, with a short finish off in the drier downstairs in the Lazarette.
We walked into the town center (small) and had an evening meal at Crabby Dicks...not first rate food, and prepared by a line cook, no doubt. We found an ice-cream at the general store and walked our dinner off through the streets of the town.
Earlier, a lovely 53 foot, dark blue hulled sailing vessel had docked just ahead of us. She was gorgeous. You know, I have a thing for dark hulled vessels!!
With four people on board, they were leaving the next day for their summer sailing in Maine. We met them again (Craig, Colleen, Sue and Steve) on our evening walk, and we all stood in the middle of the street and chatted for a good while before walking back to our boats. We had many laughs and enjoyed the company, and were delighted to be invited aboard their yacht for a drink. The conversation flowed, much repartee...which is difficult to find in the USA...and good natured ribbing and fun. We thoroughly enjoyed their company and both Waz and I felt a little bereft when we saw them off the next morning, on their way north.
We dined at home last night...flounder coated with grainy Dijon mustard and panko...Butternut squash (steamed) and Cole slaw, which is always better two or three days after making. We finished off the chocolate silk cheesecake (finally!!!) with some fresh raspberries we had purchased when we went grocery shopping around noon. The larder, or at least the fridge, is full again.
We went up to the office for the 5.15pm weather briefing, which was valuable. Tim, the Marina Owner, is very informative, and answered all our questions with much patience.
As I said in the last post...that one was written in the laundry which is where the wifi was at it's best, though VERY slow.
We began this morning with favorable weather forecast, so decided to go for it. This first part of our journey has a weather window stop...that means we can stay here, in Cape May, until the weather...wind, tide and current, are good for us to go outside into the Atlantic, for the trip up to New York Harbor. We don't have stabilizers, so we are very dependent on good weather. Yachts can go anywhere, anytime!
The wind was small, as we untied...Tim helped us turn, using the ropes...he is expert at this!, and we were off the dock at just after 9am. The tide was full, so we had no difficulty or shallow water as we made our way back to the Delaware River.
The river gets wider and wider, until you are basically at the mouth of the river at the Atlantic end.
At the end of our 6 hrs of motoring down the River, we turned into the canal that takes us to Cape May Harbor, and encountered two Ferries, at dock...passing them, up the canal to a couple of bridges with plenty of current running between. It was a little challenging getting through the second, an old rail bridge, but the Captain is expert at these things:)
Leaving the old C & D canal...for the Delaware River...again.
I took this photo to show the entry to the canal at Cape May, and also the harbor, bottom right. This feeds out into the Atlantic, so that we don't have to back track...see bottom right canal out!
Entry to the canal on the River side.
and here we are making the turn.
The two car Ferries that go between Cape May on this side of the Delaware River, and Lewes on the other side.
Two bridges with lots of current to counter
Finally coming into the Harbor at Cape May.
Passing these two interestingly names Coast Guard Vessels!!
and we are now anchored facing them...along with all the other vessels waiting for their opportunity to go up the coast.
It is now 9.30 and I can hardly see, anymore. Time for bed. His honor is already snoring beside me!:) Bless his cotton sox.
Those spots on the photo are on the inside of my trusty little camera, so I will have to send that away to be looked at, by Canon. Bummer.. I think we will invest in another one the same (they aren't expensive) so that both Waz and I have spy cameras in our pockets:) Hopefully Canon fix it or send me a new one! We will see.
Night night folks...long day ahead tomorrow...and it isn't what you might think!!!:)
