Mile 277 to Mile 223

Because of the amount of fog around us, we weren't in a hurry to leave. We couldn't see anything, anyway!

The fog cleared  and we were able to pull the anchor and make way. Another long day today, but there is no wind, and the water is glass clear...though not in color! The river is relatively wide here, as you can see.
and then it isn't. You can see the red and green markers. These are the places we don't want to be meeting any tows. Too narrow and shallow on the sides of the channels.
Another lock with our two companions. We have another night with them.
We were flabbergasted to see this....The hole is in the steel. It will have taken quite a crunk to chip this steel, and we wondered how it happened.
WE are fascinated by the rock formations, and often by the rock on the bottom and a layer of clay or red earth on top of that.
There is a lot of damage done to the banks of the river, by the tows as they accelerate around corners. Their wash literally washes away the bank and trees fall into the river.
Iron in the rock
A real snake of a river. We are in the Black Warrior/Tombigbee River at this stage.
The white cliffs at Epes. The colors on the trees were more vibrant in those trees growing in the chalky cliffs.

 This is in Mississippi..Epes.
These photos are REAL. I have not played with them on the computer. These colors are fantastic, aren't they!

Look at how little soil is holding on to that cliff...and trees still growing.

...and then the white finished, and we were back to brown or orange dirt.

We had been warned of bad weather coming....well, mostly just high winds, but these clouds were the first indication that something was coming.
These folks have the right idea, for launching their boat.

and we are anchored again. Another long day we are happy to have end, and we can relax.

There was a great sunset tonight
