Friday 2nd August '13

We didnt make it back to West Marine for the toilet because 2/3 the way through our 'shopping' expedition Blackburns called and said the toilet had arrived! Yay!

The drapes:
We had made a decision on the drapes we liked enough to hang instead of the damaged ones. Problem...they are ready-mades from Target, and no one store has the number (7) of drops we need. They also have huge grommets along the top which will need removing etc.
So today's mission was to find the rest of the curtains...we already had been to two other Targets and found 2 and 3 respectively. We had looked up on the internet where the other nearest Target store might be. That happened to be League City. This one was on a road we had not ventured down before, so we are gradually expanding our circle around our boat.
WOW! New shopping center with all the requisite stores, and the most fabulous Target yet:) Waz took off and came back with the last two required (let's hope) curtain drops. Because this is a new store and was FULL of merchandise, we just had to take some time out to look:) Looking costs nothing, so it is a worthwhile time waster!

This is the brand new Target store at League City looking from the Cake dept. It is HUGE.

As we were parked next to  TJMax and Ross stores, we were obliged to go 'looking' there too.
I came out of Ross with a multi-use brush with extendable handle...supposedly for cleaning showers...well, I will definitely use this for cleaning our cubicle showers..saves bending down in an impossibly small space. Nothing like getting down and dirty with your hands though.
TJMax we found more of our favorite Lemon infused olive Oil. Bought another four bottles ($4 each) to put away for later use. These have a 'normal' price tag of double that.
We left the area back the way we came, and took a side road perpendicular to that highway with a sign saying 'Kemah'. We knew we were on the right road, and also we had seen the name of this road in our other travels. Always good to go exploring, and this road yielded an amazing assortment of subdivisions way out in what looked like former (flat) farmland...just stuck out in the middle of nowhere...or it seemed so. Many of the homes were huge and very tightly nestled next to their neighbors. We now know these homes cost around $150-$300K...Other homes were huge but on a bigger piece of land adjacent to the Golf Course....of course the names of the subdivisions were telling...Fairway Acres, or some such. We cant get over how green everything is, considering how hot it is. What variety of grass is this that stays when there is so little rain and moisture to keep it that way? I have to say there is a lot of moisture first thing in the morning, so perhaps the dew keeps it that way.
I cant help taking photos of strange things...and when we were in Target we walked by the 'cakes' for the curiosity factor:) Well, they look so disgusting, most of them.
I know what the frosting on these cakes tastes like, and it isnt something you want to put into your body...seriously!

These looked gross, but some children somewhere will LOVE them:(
A variety of Cheesecake Factory slices..in case you want to sample them all...

We had to put some gas in the car...we were almost on empty...and this was one of the cheaper stations...Gas has gone up since we arrived. Remember that this price is per Gallon. Still WAYYY cheaper than NZ prices.

The new toilet just unpacked. We picked it up from Blackburns on our way back to the boat from our Target shopping expedition...yes, they really ARE expeditions...usually taking several hours, what with the travel time and the required 'looking' time!
She was duly installed in the afternoon, but there are other issued that need seeing to before she is operational. Of course this had three base holes where the old one had four...and this is because this is a 'modern' variety of the old one.

I forgot to tell you that we entertained on thursday night. We had invited Duncan and Dorothy (She is the Scottish one, he is the English one :) ) for a cuppa after dinner, around 8.30pm.
Seeing that they live in rather cramped quarters aboard a yacht, they were more than happy to come and enjoy the airconditioned comfort we enjoy and take for granted. And they arent in their 70's...my bad! Dorothy is turning 60 in January, and Duncan is almost 70. He actually doesnt look very old up close and personal:) and is fit as a whippet. Yachting can do that to you. Fascinating hearing about their yachting adventures all over the world, and where they are going next. They have a motorbike here so they go everywhere on that. Sunday they are off to look after their grandchildren in northern Houston, and from there they will take a two week tour through Louisiana into Florida and then back...yes, on the motorbike! I admire their adventurousness, and truth be told, would love to have a motorbike to do the same:)
Waz and I have discussed where we might put one on the boat, and the only place possible would be  inside the dinghy. Hmmm....maybe not! We might have to settle for fold-up bicyles.
They left around 11pm, and we dont think we will see them again until we meet somewhere next year on the loop. They left us their card and contact number, so we do hope we remain in contact. Such enjoyable company.

Because it was about 97F yesterday and seemed a whole lot hotter (dryer, I think), I was reluctant to sit on the back deck and sew. I set up the machine on the coffee table in airconditioned comfort and took over the salon. I was determined to make the bathroom curtains. The old ones were a real problem to remove and the fabric is stiff and uncompromising, so all in all a hot and sweaty chore in the confines of the bathroom. Simplifying things is something I thrive on...hence, when taking apart the old curtains, I decided they were much too 'fancy' and went in search of appliances that would make them less so. Again, Target came to the rescue. I found the curtain rings I was looking for and some craft thread with would suffice for the stange apparatus that is the railing for curtains above the loo.

Old shower curtain

New shower curtain

Safely back with my sewing machine, I completed the curtain task in a couple of hours. Nothing like being able to buy a readymade shower curtain (this is fabric) and modify it to go three or four ways for $19.99!:)

Rest of the bathroom

The craft thread loops I had to fashion as I couldnt find
the small hooks and loops I was looking for.

Curtains above the loo. I didnt attach the new one to the bottom track that you can see, for practical purposes. It is a pig of a thing to handle and I want to be able to wash the curtain...easily!
they certainly look fresher and lighter:)

The salon curtains are next now that we have all 7 of them. Not sure what today will bring other than at 6pm we are meeting some new friends (Katy is the office manager of the pump out company we use) to go to the Cock and Bull pub on NASA Rd 1 (they own the pump out company also) which is owned by an Aussie lady and her English hubby. We might partake of some craft brew, and then go find a restaurant for fine grinds:) I will let you know what transpires there.
Katy and her man Dean live aboard their 45ft yacht in the marina opposite ours, across Clear Creek...Portofino. We know where they are because we did a quick reccy there the other night when we went out in the dinghy.
So..I will let you know what Saturday brings when I have the appropriate photos and memories:)
