School's in!

Tonight on our walk we went right out onto theFuel Dock and sat watching the few boats parade up Clear creek. Not much traffic on Monday nights. We stood up to go, and our eyes caught the silver sheen of fish in the water. Where there is a bright light, at night, you will find fish...and shrimp (otherwise known as Prawns).
Below us in the water were literally thousands of baby cat fish, swimming and crawling over each other to get away from the larger fish whose tails we could see skimming the surface. Every now and then we would see one of the big fish make a dash for the smaller ones. They 'swarmed' still in the light like a magnet that wouldnt let go. Fascinating. On the return, we stopped at our favorite viewing place and the only place to get the cooler breeze, the bridge. Not too many night stalkers (Yellow crested Herons) tonight, and they werent too fussy about what they were eating...be it small fish or shrimp. Some nights the shrimp will be jumping at their feet and the Herons look down rather disdainfully at the flipping creatures and then go for the small fish. Picky eaters! Obviously they can be!
I sewed like crazy on saturday afternoon. Finally motivated to get these curtains made and have the place look more like OUR home. I am using the old curtains for wrapping things in that need protecting.

Because of the weather on saturday, we didnt go tiki-touring, as I told you. Yes it rained some, but then the humidity came..yech!
Sunday morning dawned clear and no wind. The water was so calm and beautiful. We seized this opportunity to put the dinghy in the water, which Waz did while I packed a picnic breakfast of strawberries, yoghurt and granola, and some canteloup. Packed up some water and that into a cooler and we were off. This time our destination was Taylor Lake, further up Clear Lake than we have been before. The boat motor didnt let us down this time:)
Leaving the safety of our marina

And entering the channel that takes us under NASA Rd 1 into Taylor Lake.. The large beast of a boat in the middle of the photo was running her Genset, and it looked like someone was living aboard. Cant think why, she is in appalling disrepair. She is a wooden boat and the paint is all gone below the waterline..not good!the fellas on the right are all fishing. We had to swing wide to avoid their lines. They dont care for us boaties interrupting their Sunday fishing. This was around 8.30am

Just under the bridge on the other side is Pinkey's Paddle Boards and Kayaks.

The  two jetskis below were attached to a private home. All have their own boat houses and lifts.

We went out knowing that we might get rained out. Wet dinghy isnt much fun as it is slippery, therefore not safe.

We kept a keen eye on these threatening clouds.

One of the HUGE homes bordering the lake. We were surprised that they only had a puny boat house, lol.

I was taking this photo into the sun, so it is a bit dark, but how nice to see a more modern home where most of them are far more 'traditional'.

We stopped at the Taylor Lake Park. It looked like a Home Owners Association park, as you had to have a key for the loo, but it didnt say that anywhere, so we set up our breakfast on the dock outside and ate in the morning sun just before 9am. It was a little cooler than previous days at this time which was nice.

This is the park, all nicely fenced. The white structure in the distance is a shelter.

By the time we had finished our breakfast and taken a short while to enjoy the cooler weather and the scenery, these clouds had moved in on us. the blue mushroom is a water tower...most of the small 'cities' within Houston seem to have them with the name of the city on the blue part.

These ducks kept us company for a bit.I guess they got bored when we didnt feed them:)
We decided to make a quick trip back to the boat, rather than risk getting caught in a thunder storm. When it rains, it deluges! and we didnt want to fight the wind and waves on the lake.
We were home dry by 9.30am, happy we had been out and to Taylor lake, one of our goals for the past two months. Yes, tomorrow we have been here two months. Hard to believe!

We decided we had time to wash down the dinghy and clean her out inside. We also took the opportunity to wash the deck underneath the dinghy, so kept her in the water until the duckboard was a bit dry. Lots of green stuff to get off the Teak decking.
Nice to have things clean and tidy!
Just as we were putting the dinghy back and tying her cover on, the first of the rain came...spits at first, but they very quickly turned into large drops.

We decided to call Katie and Dean, over at Portofino. We knew Dean was down again this past weekend, from Dallas, and they were such good company the previous weekend. They agreed to go for lunch with us to Las Haciendas, next to the Randalls supermarket we used to frequent before we fell in love with the new Krogers:)
This was a new restaurant to them, and they thoroughly enjoyed their salads with shrimp. Waz ordered a combo plate that was more food than he could eat. I ordered another salad with shrimp. Not keen on these salads...not much care taken with them and the tomatoes were not ripe enough. :(
We are always keen to talk to other boaters, and especially this couple from Michigan. Dean and katie did lots of sailing up there, so know the area intimately...Lake Michigan, that is.
They are going to give us more info before we take off.
Cockroaches....I talked about  critters getting onto the boat...I think these fellas came aboard from our towels or bag that we had taken to the pool at night. Of course we wouldnt see them in the poor light. Warren had his first experience with a large one in our bedroom! I think he must have used half a can of spray to kill it!  The next morning I found a smaller one on the kitchen counter.
We went back to Katie and Dean's 42ft yacht to get some leftover roach traps she had. They showed us around the boat...always good to see how others live aboard!
they have lived on that boat for two years now..hmmm...remind me not to collect 'stuff'!
Katie is in the process of turfing things out...clothes that dont fit etc. it is hard, because you dont necessarily want to throw something out that might fit you in 6 months time..with careful eating...right? :)
Anyway, 4pm came and went and we decided we had taken too much of their precious time together. Lovely as always to spend time with them and pick their brains. they are very creative people and can fix most things. Like kinds!

Well, it is the end of monday. Waz is off to the shower, and I must go and make the bed before getting into it. I will shower on the duckboard tonight, again. I love sitting on the bottom step showering in the open air. Keeps you cool!
More curtains made today and some shopping I will tell you about tomorrow.
Night!
