This morning was the first time we had eaten breakfast on the flydeck for quite a while...must be a couple of weeks, I think. Despite the heat and humidity, and with all the new Glas windows open, we took our tea and granola/fruit/yoghurt upstairs. The stiff breeze was heavenly!
We lingered overbreakfast, enjoying the cool upstairs, and deciding what chores needed doing or just finishing. I desperately wanted to finish the curtains in the salon, so began by cutting the huge grommets off the top of the ready-mades I bought at Target.
One good thing about these is that I dont really have to do much measuring and cutting. I can divide them in half and I get two whole curtains ..just a couple of hems and put the tape along the top...presto! curtains ready to hang:)
We had bought some ready-made cords at JoAnns on Sunday, and these look so much better and more professional than the tie-backs previously used.
Here are a couple of the curtains finished and tied back.
I told you that I had made a floral cover for the NavPod, well, here it is! I aso restitched the cover on the helm station. It should hang together for another year or so, hopefully.
I just have the two curtains in the dinette to make now (I am anxious to get them all done) and I am finished, officially. Unofficially, I still want to make some coverings for the little triangles at the end of the curtains that let the light and heat in. We went to Lowes on yesterday (monday) and were looking for some silver insulation (looks a bit like silver bubble wrap) and found some, but then we also found something WAYYY cooler...literally!
It is also thinner, like tough paper. You cannot tear it, because it is metal. It is like a rip-stop fabric. It will bend and it will crease, however.
Now...the plan is to make some snap on covers for the front windshield covers that are already there, and navy blue. Not sure who invented the colors for boat coverings, but they need their heads read. Dark fabrics on all the window coverings...duh!
With the white rip-stop nylon we purchased mail-order, I will make a border (sew it on) for the metal 'fabric' and we will attach domes to both the existing cover (currently on the windows) and the white surrounds, which will allow us to remove them when we want warmth in winter, and to keep them there when we are in port/marina and want to keep the heat out. We will roll them up when not in use and store them in bags I will make. Three sep. ones will make it easier to store them and install. Stand by for progress reports on that front...no pun intended:)
I will also use the silver for backing (on the window side) the triangles I am going to make which will be hung from suction cup hooks on the windows. this should keep the worst of the heat out. It is surprising how far into the room you can feel that heat coming from the windows, even though they are heavily tinted already.
I have had a rearrangement of all the cupboards, just to fit everything in.
Things are better packed tightly if possible, as you might imagine...less to fall over in heavy seas (not that we will be in heavy seas!) and no breakages, hopefully.
I have a large variety of oils, vingears and sauces in this cupboard. I gave in and bought a rice cooker...just because I hate cooking rice in a saucepan. the sandwich maker/gril/panini press is behind the oils. The little radiant heat cook-top is under the frying pan under the mixing bowls.
This cupboard appears to be a total waste of space. Well, where else do I put my food storage containers?
After a lunch of egg and sausage kolaches we decided to go down to Galveston and check out Offatts Bayou.
We had been told that there is a new marina down there with a fuel dock. We have been checking the prices of fuel on the local waterways and comparing prices. This new place is called Pelican's Rest Marina. They are still building it, but mostly in operation. We met with the manager who told us Diesel is $4.20 p.gallon at their fuel dock.
We wanted to see also where the Moody Gardens marina is, in case we decide to go there for a dry-run in the near future.
We love tiki-touring, as you can tell, and today was no exception. We are still awed by the destruction from Hurrican Ike, so much in evidence everywhere here. Lots of rebuilding though and new homes springing up everywhere. They are rather peculiar to the area, of course, and you will appreciate why!
this new home is spec, and they want $287,500 for it!!sheesh! This is Galveston Island prices. Pricey!
We went over to Moody Garden which was full of tourists, and right next door to the Schlitterbahn...the most amazing water park. I dint get photos, as Waz said we had some frm 2010, when we visited.
the pyramid had been built to withstand hurrican strength winds, but it was breached through a loading dock...it wasnt the winds that did the damage, but the storm surge with topped 14 feet! Anyone you talk to around here will tell you similar stories. I took these pics from their storyboard...top left.
It was hotter than hell today...just over 100F, and the air was humid to boot. We were happy to get inside and get an icecream...of course:)Nothing like a drink of cold water to refresh though.
After that we drove part way down the Island parkway and stopped at a couple of beach parks.
Can you see the truck parked on the beach? You can park on the beach in most places and drive up it too.
Turn around at the signs, and this is the other end of the beach. This is the sea wall that was erected some time in the 50's. Out there is the Gulf of Mexico....all the wayyy....
Shower on the back deck time...Waz has already gone for his, and it is 11.11pm.
Time to put the aircon on in the bedroom and enjoy a good night's sleep.
