Wednesday was a day at home...well, partly! We had visitors to the boat in the morning at 10am, to drink tea and sample the no-sugar chocolate Cheesecake, which was pronounced excellent:) Of course they had to have it with strawberries and whipped cream, so it really WAS delish!
I got the Royal Doulton tea set out, which makes tea for four plus top-ups, and we drank, ate and chatted on the fly deck. It was another lovely day, and sorry, I didn't take any photos...silly me! for shame!
Our guests left around noon, and Waz and I went out to do our final food shopping at a Publix supermarket. We had originally planned to take the car back early, but are glad we didn't do that until today noon (Thursday).
We actually didn't need much at the supermarket, having not eaten on the boat, a whole lot. This tends to happen when we stay in port for a week. It is great to discover what is cooking in places other than my kitchen!
On the way home, we had to do some tiki-touring...of course! We drove around a couple of subdivisions, marveling at the whole subdivision full of townhomes...two joined houses under one roof, and multi-family home units. They were all a little bit like ticky tacky homes (only kiwis will know what I refer to here...remember the song??) None of them looked very big, but the prices were right, from the low $100k to the high $200k bracket.
We did find some single family dwellings, but they started in the $200k range. I didn't take photos because they were rather unremarkable...again, not sure what I was or not thinking to NOT take photos...after all, I take photos of EVERYTHING! lol.
At around 4.30pm, we decided we had had enough of boring homes, and took a short detour of our local area, right next to the Marina...here you will find homes upwards o $500k! No comparison, and you know which ones we prefer...we just don't want to pay that kind of money, anymore.
We had bought sushi for me and fried chicken for Waz, at the supermarket and consumed it in the car (air conditioning!) before making our way home.
Our dinner last night was leftover fish pie with left over green beans..wow! what fun!..yes, it really did taste good, and it was wonderful not to have to cook. There is enough fish pie for our lunch tomorrow, on the road.
The rest of the fried chicken is our dinner tonight:)
The night was muggy and about 83F in the bedroom. We had showered out back, per usual, and used very warm water, as the wind was cool, but once inside the boat again, the heat was oppressive. We still managed a good night's sleep regardless. Having the fan going full blast was useful!
It was our intention to get on the road again this morning, but having watched the weather radar into the late hours of the evening, we decided to stay another night. As it turned out, the marina had charged us for tonight already, so we might have done ourselves out of a night's accommodation, leaving early!
We needed to find Sam's Club this morning, as the need to purchase more motor fuel took us to North Charleston. We hadn't been that far before, so it was interesting to see the whole new world out north of the city. More Tanger outlet malls and big box stores, basically.
We stopped first at IHOP for breakfast...Waz likes pancakes, so he had a tall stack of five...with syrup...may he suffer eternally!!!!:) and I had my favorite hash browns with bacon and eggs. Not frightfully good, but we were hungry by 10am. Grapefruit and coffee on the boat at 7.30am, but we weren't ready for breakfast yet.
Good thing we went to Sam's Club, coz I was able to get my glasses tightened and the price for motor oil (the one Waz needed) was $20 less per case, than Costco, which we had priced earlier in the week.
While out that way we also visited Walmart (before Sam's club) next door and purchased me a few pairs of new short. Cant be beaten at $13 each! All my old ones are just that...old and way too big, now. :) Having lost about 20lbs, this is showing up in my closet with less choice!
Did I tell you that Waz has lost about 12 lbs? This despite eating pancakes and fried chicken, lol.
We came home via Enterprise Car Rental where we turned the car in, and they brought us home. Such nice folks at this branch:)
The rain had come and gone all morning, but though we had our raincoats with us, we never actually needed them. This afternoon is a different matter, however. The low pressure system is sitting right over us, and you should hear the wind moaning across the marshes...and the boats are pitching and yawing at their moorings, bobbing up and down like corks, in the 4ft swells...and we have had white caps on the river. The river is barely 355 meters (1,164 feet) across, but the water rides through here at great knots. We are on an outside T-dock, so we get the full force of the wind and water. We have put out another fender to ride the dock, so we don't damage ourselves, as we are being pushed against the floating dock.
It looks like the weather will clear in the early hours of tomorrow morning, so we are scheduling our departure for around to 9am. There is a 6am low tide, and we need to be about 3 hrs on the other side of that to get through some of the shallows to come.
We had a diver take a look at our props and bottom, yesterday morning...he was working down the dock...and he said the ends of the props were shiny...hmmm...we don't remember hitting bottom or sand, any time recently?? Otherwise, he said we are fine, though we don't want to sit around in this fast moving water...more barnacles and critters in orifice, in fast water.
We have made enquiries about staying here over the winter, and the cost at the marina is favorable. We would be guaranteed a winter, that is for sure. This is all dependent on whether we complete the Loop this year, or just go up the coast and spend the summer cruising. Data collection ahead of time is great:)
Well, Waz is taking a nanna nap, and I feel like Im going to do the same...rocking boats are rather soporific! I had a nap yesterday for an hour...remarkable, as I don't/cant normally take naps. Waz on the other hand can sleep anywhere, anytime...I am eternally jealous!
We have had 'rollers' on the water, and right now there are white caps, so it is about a 4ft sea!
The wind is still whistling and halyards are clanging all throughout the marina...these darned yachties need to tighten their stays, as it were.
Yes, this is the river! totally WHIPPED up.
White caps...
Here comes more rain...
But the good news is....I will be picking the first of the tomatoes tomorrow, me thinx:) little beauties!!
...and look at the lush herb garden. I have spied the mint putting our more tendrils to overtake everything else, so I will have to get the scissors out and do a prune job on it. I can see pesto making in my future, with the Basil so lush.
That's it for now folks. I will go and put my head down and enjoy the 'ride' with the rocking boat. North tomorrow, and in about 5 days we should be in Beaufort, North Carolina. Catch you then!
