Life's Little Pleasures

One of the things that make us smile, almost every day, is the presence of Dolphin. I know I have said this before, but we immediately perk up when we see them approaching, or even just fishing, in the distance.
I don't know why we havnt done this before, but this morning Waz decided to go down to the bow and watch them bow surfing! WOW! It was spectacular! We usually only enjoy their antics alongside us, but today three or four Dolphin were bow surfing, and I swear they were telling us what fun it was. They turn onto their sides, while surfing, and look up at us ...I would like to believe they are smiling too:)

They skim along at the same knots we are travelling, which kind of blows us away. We were doing close to 9 knots, here, and they were right under the anchor, at the bow. The water wasn't too dirty, in this area, so they were reasonably clear to see..as you can see.
out of focus, but this one was on the starb'd side, the others were on the port side. Hard to get them all together.

...but I managed when the three of them were jostling on the port side. the peeled away very fast and then were gone. They surfed for at least 15 mins!

I struggle to show you the true colors of the Marshes, but I think I have found that early morning photos show them the best. I love the fishermen along the shoreline:)

Sorry about the screen (shot)...we are leaving our anchorage and about to turn left back into the ICW

Just opposite the entry to our anchorage is this Ferry Stop, at Haig Point. These little ferries go between the many Islands here.

Loved this house on Daufuries Island, just across the sound from Hilton Head Island. I wonder if it was one of the original Lighthouses in the area. It might be hard to see the light, now..too many trees.

Look how stunning the ocean is today! And this home on the spit! That is the outskirts of Savannah, in the background.

...looking back down the ICW from whence we came, yesterday.

The Lighthouse on Hilton Head Island. We loved the area...just so much to explore...wish we had more time to do this.

We are now in one of the smaller Sounds...Caibogue Sound. It was still large, in the scheme of things.  At least it was deep:)

One of the little ferries taking people to work. We left the anchorage about 8.30am, and I guess these were people on their way to work.

Lots of little boats came out of the river we were parked in, this morning around 7 - 7.30am. They looked like they were also ferrying people to work. The same boats had delivered people back up river last night. They sure didn't slow down for us! the wash wasn't pleasant, that's for sure.

The tide is 6-7 feet in this area, so these boats are truly high and dry, on their lifts. Most of the docks are floating, so there isn't a problem there.

Half way up Hilton Head Island, these lovely homes, but this Yacht Basin had it's own lock..due to the tide!

The Crabbers were out early, as were their constant companions, the Pelicans:) Always hopeful of a morsel. We boaters hate the crab pots...they can ruin a perfectly good engine if we get one wrapped around our propellers.

Being literal kind of people (no, really?? ) we thought this sign was a bit of a hoot...Deep Water Lot...For Sale. So...be literal!

Another lovely home along the ICW. We love the deep overhangs, screened porches, which are necessary, given the bugs, and the huge trees. This one has PALMS!!!:)

Oysters! Amazing to see them growing like this. I guess once they took away the oysters, the marshes took over. Roads et al used to be made of oyster shells.
It is the bottom of the tide, here, which is why you can see the oyster piles.

No, he is not contemplating his navel, but Dolphin gazing...it is a new sport~!

Then it was my turn! Im at the helm...he really shouldn't turn his back on me...:)

We came out of the river where the Dolphin were, and into yet another Sound. Stunning!

We crossed this Sound and went straight into another River. This one took us around the horseshoe past the pretty little town of Beaufort. Here we are coming up to the bridge that connects Ladies Island on the right, with the mainland, where the town is. This is a swing bridge with a 34 ft clearance, so we had no trouble getting underneath her.

We can see two church spires, from the dock we are parked at, but this was the only one I could get into the photo as we passed by on the river. All those buoys are in the mooring field.

coming up to the town marina

which lines the river for a ways in front of the town, as you can see.

I am fascinated by these bridges...there is a person in that there control box sitting in the middle of this swing bridge. Most swing bridges aren't this fancy!..and they are generally only 8ft off the water, which means they are either open for us, or we have to request and opening especially, or they are open at set times of the day, and we just have to time our passage accordingly, or wait in the usually deeper waiting area on either side.

Looking back across the marshes at the bridge and the town, from where we are parked at the dock.

Up yet another river! but parked.

What a lovely day...but we parked at around 11.30am, having come only 30 miles, to Beaufort, from Hilton Head Island. Nice short day!
This is the view from the boat, up the river. That crane thing is installing a new floating dock.

..here it is calling it quits for the night, before anchoring just down river of us.

and following that, not far afterwards, was this guy on his stand-up paddle board with attendant boat to take him back up river.

We did our laundry, took a walk to the Publix supermarket about a mile down the road...in 90F heat! Stifling!! and on the way back, saved our lives at the Beaufort Bread Company café. We indulged in a fancy looking Queen Amman pastry which had almond paste  and orange peel in it..yummy! and an iced Mocha which had coffee ice cubes. Nice to take time out, with our attention getting red cart full of groceries (how did everyone know we were from the marina????lol), and sit in airconditioned comfort indulging ourselves:)

The boat was very hot by this time, even tho all the curtains had been pulled to keep the sun out, and Waz turned the airconditioning on.

After our long walk in the heat, we didn't feel like doing much, of course, which was good for us!
We did buy a pork loin wrapped in bacon, for dinner, so I set about cooking that very slowly in the covered frying pan. It was delicious!...and we have enough left overs for a couple of meals:) My kind of food!! fresh baby asparagus with sweet potato!

We went for another walk after dinner...in the dark, as it turned out...which was the coolest time of the day and then settled in to watch a movie. One good thing about being in a marina...WIFI that we don't have to pay for!

We have friends in CHarleston to connect with, so we are making arrangements to do that, right now. Looking forward to seeing these folks whose children were 4 and 2 when I last saw them...they are now 18 and 16! :)
oh..and it is Mother's Day on Sunday. Every day should be Mother's Day, and Valentines and all the others rolled into one. We should just take care of each other, love each other and appreciate each other all the time. Slightly unreal, but what do you think would happen if we did?? Oh! Hallmark might go out of business!:)
Never mind!
Time for me to get on with my Thursday...breakfast out? it is a distinct possibility...at the same café, where they make an excellent coffee!:) how tempting!

Ciao Ciao.
